Avon was originally settled in 1645 as part of Farmington. It was known as Northington, or the North Parish of Farmington, until it was incorporated as a separate town in 1830, taking its name from the Avon River in England. In fact, that river in England runs through the town where the legendary William Shakespeare was born!
Today, Avon is part of Hartford County and is governed by a Town Council/Town Manager form of local government. In 2020, Avon’s population was 19,795 with a median age of 45. The town covers 23.15 square miles and is subject to hot and humid summers before succumbing to frigid winters. Summer temperatures can reach as high as 90°F on some of the warmer days while winter temperatures can drop to 0°F. Avon has moderate precipitation throughout the year with some snowfall during the winter months. The area also experiences thunderstorms in the summertime, bringing heavy rains to the region. To live comfortably, HVAC systems need thorough attention and maintenance regularly to navigate the extreme weather of New England.
